Dental crowns are among the most common treatments offered at dentists’ offices and one of the most versatile options for patients. Dr. James Maxwell at Crestwood Dental Group partners with patients from the St. Louis, Missouri, area to maintain the health of their smiles. Dr. Maxwell empowers them with clear, trusted information about their treatment options.

Crowns may be a good option for patients with various dental, cosmetic, and health concerns. Here are four reasons why this treatment could be in your future:

To strengthen damaged teeth

Your teeth may be stronger than skeletal bone, but that does not mean they are impervious to damage. When teeth are weakened by conditions such as enamel erosion and decay or significant wear and tear, fractures, and other trauma, Dr. Maxwell may explore options for crown treatment with you. The crown is placed on the healthy tooth structure that has been prepared or reshaped to receive the dental restoration. With its protective covering restored, the tooth is now strong and no longer vulnerable to future damage as long as good and consistent oral hygiene at home and professional care at our office is maintained.

To “makeover” teeth with cosmetic defects

Cosmetic dentistry procedures like bonding and veneers are a more conservative option than crowns. However, they are not appropriate to resolve all cosmetic imperfections. Dr. Maxwell may recommend dental crowns for chewing teeth and significant cosmetic cases, such as considerably deformed or worn teeth. We often use ceramics such as porcelain and zirconia to fabricate our crowns. So, these crowns look natural – like real tooth enamel – while also restoring the strength and durability of the treated teeth.

To replace teeth

Crowns are versatile and can be used to rebuild teeth and replace irreparably damaged teeth. They are part of both conventional dental bridges and implant systems. Crowns are applied to neighboring anchor teeth to hold up a dental bridge. They are also attached to implants in the jaw. With the implant restored, it can function as a natural tooth root to hold the new tooth (dental crown) in place.

To promote lasting oral health

Crowns restore the health and function of your mouth. They may ease pain and other distressing symptoms by treating the underlying condition responsible for such distress. Plus, they restore an attractive smile. When you feel good about your smile, it shows! You walk a little taller. You may speak more confidently and laugh freely without embarrassment about the look of visibly damaged teeth or gaps in your smile. Porcelain and zirconia dental crowns are particularly attractive to many of our patients. They are made from metal-free and highly biocompatible materials. So, patients concerned about adverse reactions or sensitivities to metals have peace of mind that their treated teeth will continue to look, feel, and function great for many years to come.

Crestwood Dental Group is proud to partner with patients from St. Louis, MO, and beyond to monitor the condition of their crowns and other restorations. We tailor products, treatments, and techniques for brushing and flossing to each individual’s unique needs. With consistent care at our office and at home, your crowns will hold up well, and no future treatment for the formerly damaged teeth may be needed.
